How to Get Through Tryout Season… As a Parent
September signals the start of a new school year and the kickoff of school sports!
For anyone with aspiring athletes in your world, here are some friendly reminders of how to support them through this exciting and often nerve-wracking(!) time.
Listen and validate feelings of nerves and excitement (Try! “It makes sense to be nervous, I believe in your ability to handle this, you have worked hard, I’m here to support you, you can be brave and nervous…”)
Remind them nerves are normal and often mean they care (“Tryouts are big, it makes sense you’re feeling emotional”)
Focus goals on what is controllable (effort, attitude, self-talk, body language)
Avoid comparisons and starting sentences such as: "Well, when I was an athlete..."
Avoid putting extra pressure on outcomes (“Playing football was the best years of my life…”)
Keep routines predictable (breakfast foods, bedtime, etc.)
Be honest about the tryout process (What they can expect, how challenging it might be)
Help them reflect after tryouts: “What did you learn?” instead of only “Did you make it?”
Encourage staying off cell phones to avoid distractions
Remind them that their worth is not tied to making a team
Celebrate courage!
Made the team? Stay humble.
Didn't make the team? Avoid jumping to problem-solving. Leave space for feelings and reflection. Reminder, those aspiring athletes are watching for how you react to the news as well.
Tryouts are emotional and complex.
Remind your humans that they are brave, strong, and that their willingness to put themselves out there will lead to many more adventures.
