How to Prepare for Your First Coaching Session (you’re more ready than you think!)

Starting coaching can feel exciting, uncomfortable, hopeful, and vulnerable. You’re talking to a girl who used to set a reminder to cancel her therapy appointments 48 hours in advance to avoid the cancellation fee. Listen, I get it. Talking about yourself, particularly about where you are and where you want to be, can be unsettling (but also, soon to be really awesome!).

Great news! ALL of my clients have said the following: They wish they knew how much better they would feel after that first session!

To help you with some of those feelings, here are a few things to consider before our first conversation:

  • Coaching is not about having the answers. It is about the willingness to explore.

  • Reflect on what brought you here. What motivated you to make the appointment? What feels stuck? What are you hoping could be different?

  • Let go of the pressure to perform. This is not a test, and no one is judging you. You won’t be graded or evaluated, I promise. Simply listened to in a judgment-free space.

  • Be honest. It’s really hard, I know. But, if you can, be honest. If you know there is no chance you’re going to get up and work out, let me know. If you’re working every night until 9:00 p.m., say so. This will help us move forward in a practical, sustainable way.

  • Think about what support looks like for you. Is it encouragement? An accountability partner? Clarity on next steps? Structure and boundaries? Consider where you have thrived in the past and what got you there. If you’re not sure, which is very common, we will figure this out together.

  • There is no right way to say anything. Don’t get hung up on the delivery, I’ll seek clarification if I need it. I work with teenagers…I can decipher all sorts of scripts.

  • There is no “right” reason to seek support. Maybe you want to overhaul your career, or lose two pounds before your sister’s wedding. Both are great reasons to get coaching.

  • You’re allowed (and encouraged!) to take up space. This is all about you. That may not be what you are used to, so I want you to bask in the attention and conversation.

  • I think you’re brave, I hope you think so too. Seeking out coaching for some is tough, and you’re doing it! Proud of you.

  • You’re more ready than you think. I know you’ve been thinking about this. You’re ready. I got you.

See you soon.
